Source: Strengthening Europe’s Tech Sovereignty

On 3 June 2026, in a major shift in its approach to technology, the European Commission adopted an ambitious set of measures to bolster the EU’s digital autonomy. The package includes:

  • two legislative proposals: the Chips Act 2.0 and the Cloud and AI Development Act
  • the EU Open Source Strategy
  • a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in Energy

Well, their heart is in the right place for sure. To what effect, we shall see. The EU clearly is the only, or at least the strongest entity in the world putting up a fightwith the tech giants. However, there’s always a certain angst in me whenever the EU makes new regulations or rules. They are really a hit or miss.

I wholeheartedly believe that we must be advancing open source adoption, not only in the EU, but globally as well. It is in the best interest of everybody, except for the tech giants. The EU has been reasonably good in this, this is just the latest in a long series of measures.
